Dental implants have become the most reliable way to preserve your health and oral function after tooth loss, but the progress doesn’t stop after the procedure is over. In order to heal properly, and get the most out of your dental implants, there are several steps you must take before your final restorations are placed. The following guideline illustrates the different ways you can prevent complications after dental implant surgery.
The Basics
There are obvious concerns which are still important to consider after implant placement. For one, you may be tempted to touch the treatment site after surgery, but remember that you are still healing and the site should be cared for as tenderly as possible. This is especially true for the first few days following placement. Do not be alarmed if you experience bleeding or see red, irritated tissue after surgery; this is normal and expected. If the bleeding is excessive, you should gently press gauze to the area. But if this doesn’t stop the bleeding within a half hour, contact your oral surgeon’s office immediately.
Additional Care: Diet and Hygiene
After an invasive surgery like implant placement, swelling is to be expected. You can address this discomfort by regularly applying a cold pack. Take care to reduce the temporary sensitivity of your mouth by only consuming liquids and soft foods for the first week or so. Your doctor will be able to monitor your progress and determine an appropriate time to resume your normal diet. But in the meantime, drink plenty of liquid, as this helps keep you hydrated and rinses your mouth of loose bacteria.
While you should maintain your normal brushing routine, you should still approach the treatment site with care. Brush as gently as possible around the implant site; take it slow so that you do not aggravate the area by accident.
This consideration can also be applied to physical activity. It’s important to take it easy after any kind of operation, including oral surgery. If you play sports or exercise regularly, take a few days’ break after the procedure so that you do not compromise your health.
